Crocodile Hand Puppet

My friend is a teacher and was after a Crocodile Hand Puppet to go with some finger puppet monkeys she was making to help teach the children maths and also fun too.

Sorry about the photo quality and messy background, I didn't intend on posting the pattern so didn't take the best photos. However it is apparently a hit with the kids so thought I would share

If you have any question or corrections please let me know as I will greatly appreciate any feedback! Also if you do try out this pattern, please post a picture as I will love to see your recreations.

You will need:

  • 3mm crochet hook (Can use 4mm if preferred)
  • Yarn needle
  • Yarn
  • Soft toy filling

Stitches and abbreviations used:

(I am from England but use US crochet terms)
  • MC - Magic circle/ring
  • Ch - Chain
  • SC - Single crochet
  • Inc - Increase stitch (2 single crochets into one stitch)
  • Dec - Decrease stitch (single crochet 2 stitches together)
  • HDC - Half double crochet
  • DC - Double crochet
  • ST - Stitch
  • FLO - Front loop only
  • BLO - Back loop only
  • SLST - Slip stitch
  • P - Picot
  • FO - finish off
Other things to note....

  • This is worked in continuous rounds. It is helpful to use a stitch marker to keep track
  • The number in ( ) at the end of each round indicates the total stitch count for that round
  • *  * indicates repeated series of stitches
  • Use invisible decreases for a neater finished product
  • Stitches in [ ]  are worked into one stitch

Finger Mitten (a):
  1. MC (6)
  2. *Inc* (12)
  3. *1sc, Inc* (18)
  4. 18sc (18)
  5. *2sc, inc* (24)
  6. 24sc (24)
  7. *3sc, inc* (30)
  8. 30hdc (30)
  9. *4hdc, inc(with hdc)* (36)
  10. 36hdc (36)
  11. 36dc (36)
  12. *5hdc, inc (with hdc)* (42)
  13. 42dc (42)
  14. *6hdc, inc (with hdc)* (48)
  15. 48dc (48)
  16. *7hdc, inc (with hdc)* (54)
  17. 54dc (54)
  18. 54sc (54)
  19. FO

Thumb Mitten (b):
  1. MC (6)
  2. *inc* (12)
  3. *1sc, inc* (18)
  4. *2sc, inc* (24)
  5. 24sc (24)
  6. *3sc, inc* (30)
  7. 30hdc (30)
  8. 30hdc (30)
  9. *4hdc, inc (with hdc)* (36)
  10. 36dc (36)
  11. 36dc (36)
  12. 36dc (36)
  13. 36sc (36)
  14. Join to finger mitten by crocheting through the wrong side of thumb mitten and right side of finger mitten at the same time when placed next to each other. Similar to how you join legs together when making a one piece doll. Do 18sc like this to join the pieces. Then 56sc around the new total circumference of the piece through the right side. Note that you will not add any more stitches to the joining row. (This sounds very complicated but will hopefully make sense!)
  15. 56dc (56)
  16. 56dc (56)
  17. 56dc (56)
  18. 56dc (56)
  19. *5hdc, dec* (48)
  20. 48hdc (48)
  21. *4hdc, dec* (40)
  22. 40hdc (40)
  23. 40dc (40)
  24. 40dc (40)
  25. 40dc (40)
  26. 40dc (40)
  27. 40dc (40)
  28. 40dc (40)
  29. 40hdc (40)
  30. 2slst and FO

Teeth, Nostrils and Back Spikes:

These are made up of joining a piece of yarn and slst to secure into place. Then repeating the following... *sc, hdc, dc, slst*. These can be done in a straight line (ideal for the spikes) or can be curved which is ideal to shape the nostrils and follow the curve of the jaw for the teeth.
I add the back spikes after I have sewn on the eyes so you can come back to this step later

Eyes x2:
  1. In black - MC (6)
  2. Change to white - *Inc*(12)
  3. 12 sc (12)
  4. 12sc (12)
  5. 12sc (12)
  6. *Dec* (6)
  7. FO Hiding yarn tails behind eye and a bit of soft toy stuffing to bulk out.

Eye Lids x2:
  1. In green - Ch 8, turn
  2. 7sc, ch1, turn
  3. 1sc, 1hdc, *dc inc* x3, 1hdc, 1sc, ch1, turn
  4. 1sc, 1hdc, 6dc, 1hdc, slst
  5. FO Leaving long yarn tail.
Shape and sew eyelids to the eyes to secure them in place and then sew to body. The eye lids will cover the open back of the eyes.

Hi there :) Thanks for the pattern. I am in the process of making it right now! I see on your first photo there are legs, but no instructions to make them. Do you have to pattern for those too? I think they look great :) Thanks
